Why Buy Used EMG/EEG Equipment?

New EMG, EEG, and PSG systems routinely cost tens of thousands of dollars. For a solo practice, a satellite clinic, or a lab adding a backup unit, a well-maintained used system from a reputable manufacturer can deliver the same clinical accuracy at a fraction of the cost. Used equipment is a normal, common purchase in electrodiagnostic medicine - the key is knowing what to check before you buy.

What to Ask Before You Buy Used Equipment

1. What is the manufacture year and model?

Older systems (often 10-20+ years) can still perform reliably if they've been maintained, but replacement parts and manufacturer software support may be limited for discontinued models. Ask specifically which model and year you're getting, and whether the manufacturer still supports it.

2. What's included?

A complete used EMG system typically includes the base unit, laptop or display, preamp, stimulator, and a soft carrying case. Missing accessories (like a stimulator or footswitch) can mean unexpected additional cost. Always ask for a full itemized list of what ships with the unit.

3. Is it in stock and tested, or sold as-is?

Ask whether the seller has powered on and tested the specific unit you're buying, not just 'this model typically works fine.' A seller who can confirm the individual unit is functional and answer specific questions about its condition is a good sign.

4. What warranty is offered?

Warranty terms vary significantly by seller and by item - some used equipment ships with no warranty, others with 30-90 days or more. Get the warranty terms in writing before you commit, and ask what it covers (parts, labor, or both).

5. Is calibration or software licensing an issue?

Some diagnostic systems require ongoing software licenses or periodic calibration. Confirm whether the license transfers to you as the new owner and whether any recalibration is needed on arrival.
